TRAFFIC CONTROL INSTRUCTION OFFER

Under Ontario’s Occupational Health & Safety Act and its Regulations, employers have a general duty to provide Traffic Control instruction to those workers who are to be assigned the tasks of directing or controlling vehicular traffic.

Section 69(4) of Ontario’s safety regulations for Construction Projects states: 

A worker who is required to direct vehicular traffic,

a) shall be a competent worker;

b) shall not perform any other work while directing vehicular traffic;

c) shall be positioned in such a way that he or she is endangered as little as possible by vehicular traffic; and

d) shall be given adequate oral and written instructions, in a language that he or she understands, with respect to directing vehicular traffic and, those instructions shall include a description of the signals that are to be used.

SIGNAL PERSON COMPONENT FOR BACKING UP VEHICLES:

This course also covers the safe work principles of directing vehicles traveling in reverse. The employer is required to provide oral and written instruction and training to employees assigned to signaling – as per section 106 (1.5) and to traffic control as per section 69 of O.H.&S. regulations.
